Clean Energy (Solar)

Production

When the Fugwa Farm reaches its full production capacity, it is projected to require approximately 1MWp of energy. This significant demand poses challenges for PNG Power’s aging infrastructure, which is already strained and subject to frequent blackouts. Given the critical nature of maintaining a consistent energy supply, particularly for the on-site cold storage facility, Yellow Palm Ltd cannot rely solely on PNG Power for its energy needs.

To address this, the company is in advanced discussions with RSNKP, a Switzerland-based solar power EPC company, to construct a 20MWp solar power plant at Fugwa. The required 23 hectares of land for solar farming have been generously provided by the local community. The project design and documentation are currently being developed collaboratively by both parties.

Distribution

With a production capacity of 20MWp, 19MWp of the generated electricity will constitute surplus energy. Yellow Palm Ltd plans to supply this surplus to the PNG Power grid through a sales and purchase agreement.

This initiative will significantly enhance PNG Power’s ability to deliver a reliable power supply to customers in Hela Province. Furthermore, the project represents a milestone for PNG as the first large-scale commercial solar energy initiative, generating clean, zero-emission power.

At a time when developed nations are transitioning to renewable energy, PNG, as a member of the global community, must also play its part in combating climate change. As an island nation particularly vulnerable to the effects of global warming, such as rising sea levels, it is imperative to act decisively. If we do not lead by example now, who will?
